Benelli Motorcycles
Benelli Motorcycles herald from Italy in Europe, this motorcycle manufacturer is now own by the Chinese company Qianjiang Group.
They were first established in Pesaro, Italy in the year 1911. The business was originally financed by Teresa Benelli who a widow, invested the family capital and savings into the new motorcycle business with the hope that it would provide a secure future for her six sons namely: Giovanni, Giuseppe, Filippo, Francesco, Antonio and Domenico.
The business started out first in the family owned business - Benelli Garage where they repaired motorcars and motorcycles, but right from the start, in those early days, they were able to produce all of the spare parts required which were needed for repairs. 1920 saw their first major milestone, when the company built their very first completed engine in-house, this was a 75cc, two stroke, single cylinder engine. This was then inventively introduced to a cycle frame. Just one year later, the fledgling company had actually produced it's very first own motorcycle, using their previously built engine which had now increased it's power output to 98cc.
Another couple of years pass and the Benelli Motorcycles company is set to go from strength to strength. Antonio, one of the six brothers had an awesome knack it was found for motorcycle racing and he did this with a Benelli motorcycle which had been specially designed for competition use. His nickname was to become 'Tonino The Terrible' for his outstanding track racing capabilities. Astride a Benelli 175 motorcycle he went on to win four Italian championship titles in just five years. Unfortunately he died in 1932 and his illustrious motorcycle racing career was cut short following what was deemed at the time to be, a 'silly' accident.
With WWll looming, the Benelli Motorcycle company launched their next motorcycle dream motorcycle, the 4 cylinder supercharged 250cc racing motorbike. The intended purpose for this racing machine was to compete in the 1940 season, building on the previous years successes in 1939 at the Isle of Man (UK) TT 250cc lightweight class race. With the start of the war years, the Benelli Four as it came to be called, was limited to competition in just a small handful of Italian domestic race events.
Rolling forward the years to the late 1980's, 1989 to be precise there was hope for a revival with the backing of Pesaro based manufacturer Giancarlo Selci, however the timing was still not absolutely perfect for a real comeback.
Only a few more years needed to pass however, into the mid 1990's. 1995 saw the rejuvenation of the brand when Andrea Merloni took the reigns of the company. Shortly after results came in swiftly with the launch first of the Tornado 900 Tre super sport motorcycle in 2002, followed by the current launch of the TNT, the roadster motorcycle. Peter Goddard, the former Australian Superbike legend signed with Benelli motorcycles in the year 2001 and this accelerated the development of the Tornado Tre 900.
Today, Benelli motorcycles is part of the Chinese motor group - Qianjiang, a corporation found in south east China, the city of Wenling. Benelli Q.J. as they are now known is located in their original town of birth, Pesaro, Italy - where the previous owners based the company facilities, they still therefore retain the whole of the workforce previously working at Benelli motorcycles.
