Based in Wichita, Kansas - Big Dog Motorcycles is an all American motorcycle manufacturer of semi-customized, mid-priced motorcycles and chopper bikes. Big Dog Motorcycles is a fairly young company by motorcycling standards with it's inception, company formation starting in the year 1994. 2006 saw the 20,000th motorcycle manufactured by the company.
In their first year of operation Big Dog Motorcycles produced just one single motorcycle known somewhat affectionately as "Old Smokey", complete with it's over-sized fenders with a classic cruiser style which was to point the way for the company to take in most of it's future stable motorcycle and chopper designs. 1997 saw the Big Dog Motorcycles manufacturer hit $2 million dollars in total sales and by the year 2000, had extended their production to such a degree that a move to larger premises was felt to be the best business move for this fledgling company. This new 110,000 square foot manufacturing plant was to also become their brand new worldwide headquarters. With rapid growth under way, further expansion beckoned and the total size is now over 175,000 square feet. 2007 saw the company securing over 100 dealers in total, they now employ well in excess of 300 people.
The Big Dog Motorcycle brand currently produces five models, these are the: Big Dog K-9, the Big Dog Ridgeback, the Big Dog Bulldog, The Big Dog Mastiff and last but not least the Big Dog Pitbull.
The current range all utilize a 117 cubic inch V-Twin engine, a 6 speed transmission gearbox, a one piece fuel tank, wide rear tires, and an extensive use of fully chromed components. The five models could each be described as either cruider motorcycles or chopper style motorcycles. One of the major differences between the models is the rear tire width, 250mm versus 300mm and front tube length.
