Ducati motorcycles are an Italian company motorcycle manufacturer from Bologna, Italy.
Early history of Ducati motorcycles: In 1926 the brothers; Adriano, Bruno and Marcello Ducati founded the Societa Scientifica Radio Brevetti Ducati in the Italian city of Bologna to produce tubes, condensers and other radio components.
Fast forward to the war years, 1944 to be precise and the company announced it's intention to sell Cucciolo's, pushrod engines to the general public. The first of these were only available as motors which could be attached to ordinary bicycles. These proved very popular and were snapped up in large quatities by some business people, who adapted them via installation into their own frames and then offered these complete units for sale. 1950, after more than 200,000 Cucciolo engines had been sold, the Ducati company finally offered their own motorcycle within which to install these popular engines, and so the Ducati legend was born.
This first motorcycle was a 60cc machine which weighed 98lbs and achieved a top speed of 40mph and just under 200mpg. A little later and Ducati dropped the name Cucciolo, replacing the motorcycle name with: "55M" and "65TL".
The market was by now moving towards larger motorcycles and it was time for Ducati motorcycles to increase their offer base. An early impression was made in 1952 at the Milan Show seeing the launch of their Ducati 65TS and the Cruiser, a 4 stroke motor cruiser. The Cruiser however was not a huge success although several thousand were produced over a 2 year period before production ceased.

Ducati Motorcycles today are best known for manufacturing high performance motorcycles which are characterized by large capacity, 4 stroke, 90 degree L twin engines featuring a desmodromic valve design. Modern Ducatis remain among the dominant performance motorcycles available today partly because of the Desmodromic valve design, which is very close to it's 50th year of use. Desmodromic valves are closed with a separate, dedicated cam lobe and lifter instead of the conventional valve springs used in most internal combustion engines. This allows the cams to have a more radical profile, thus opening and closing the valves more quickly without the risk of valve-float which is likely when using a "passive" closing mechanisms under the same conditions.
While most other manufacturers utilize wet-clutches (with the spinning parts bathed in oil), Ducati motorcycles use multiplate dry clutches in many of their current motorcycles. The dry clutch eliminates the power loss from oil viscosity drag on the engine even though the engagement may not be as smooth as the oil bath versions, and the clutch plates can wear more rapidly.
The chief designer of Ducati motorcycles from the 1950s was the late Fabio Taglioni (1920-2001). He designed most Ducatis during this period, ranging from the small single cylinder machines that were highly successful in the Italian 'street races' up to the large capacity twins of the 80s. Ducati introduced the Pantah in 1979; its engine was updated in the 1990s in the Ducati SuperSport (SS) series. All modern Ducati engines are derivatives of the Pantah, which uses a toothed belt to actuate the engine's valves. Taglioni used the Cavallino Rampante (identified with the Ferrari brand) on his Ducati motorcycles, Taglioni chose this emblem of courage and daring as a sign of respect and admiration for Francesco Baracca, a heroic World War I fighter pilot that died during an air raid in 1918.
